Welcome to The Kovno Legacy

Greetings from Virginia | July 2026

Summer is well underway, and as we reach the halfway point of 2026, Theresa and I wanted to share a brief update on what we've been working on and what's ahead for The Kovno Legacy.

A mountain, a meadow, and a new beginning

A little over a year ago, on May 1, 2025, we moved to a home perched on the side of a mountain in Charlottesville, Virginia. What looked at first like an overgrown hillside soon became an unexpected discovery. Hidden beneath the brush were freshwater springs and a remarkable variety of trees, including Bald Cypress, Redbud, Banana, Pear, Cherry, Oak, and Holly.

With no way to reach the land below our deck, we built stairs into the hillside and uncovered the perfect place for creating a meadow garden filled with native grasses and wildflowers. Theresa envisioned a peaceful habitat for local pollinators and wildlife, and together we've slowly transformed what was once an inaccessible forest into a thriving natural space.

The book, finally

For more than twenty-six years, I hoped to write a book that would tell the story of my family's journey while exploring the meaningful coincidences that have quietly shaped the course of my life.

In 2023, Theresa took the years of research I'd gathered and began writing the manuscript from the ground up. After completing a five hundred page first draft, life temporarily pulled us in other directions as we navigated loss, our move to Virginia, and settling into our new home.

This year, Theresa returned to the manuscript, refining it into its second draft. We are now targeting publication in 2027, and we're excited to say that the companion website is nearly ready to launch.

‘The Kovno Legacy: Surrendering to Synchronicity’

The Kovno Legacy: Surrendering to Synchronicity traces five generations of one family across two centuries, weaving personal memoir with sweeping history. Beginning amid Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia, the book follows ancestors from the forests of Lithuania to nineteenth century London, through South Africa, and into the United States, each chapter revealing how chance and meaningful coincidence shaped their choices and survival.

This is both a historical saga and a reflective inquiry into synchronicity—the recurring pattern of fortuitous events that guided the family through upheaval, risk, and renewal. Each life story becomes a lesson in resilience and inherited adaptation, showing how trauma, courage, and small, timely encounters ripple across generations.

The narrative argues that what we dismiss as coincidence can be a navigational force: by noticing and responding to these moments, we can influence our path rather than remain passive. The book closes on a powerful note, inviting readers to embrace unexpected turns with courage and love and to recognize the invisible threads that connect past and present.

For readers who love historical depth and personal revelation, The Kovno Legacy offers a compact, moving testament to destiny, grace, and the human capacity to turn chance into purpose.

Looking ahead

As the book moves toward publication, we'll continue sharing stories, historical discoveries, and behind the scenes updates on the new website. We hope you'll follow along as this journey continues, and you'll be among the first to know when The Kovno Legacy is published.

Thank you for being part of the journey,

Alan Brigish
